About Coton House Farm

The farm was originally used as a bit of a resting place by the farmers en route to the historic city of Lichfield (If you haven't been to Lichfield you should really check it out too, it's a very pretty and small city with lots to do and see).

The farm has been in the village of Whittington since the 16th century and has been running a family-owned wedding venue now for over 20 years. This means they know exactly what they are doing and you are in great hands.

What is quite special about the venue is that sustainability is at its core. They have a farm-to-fork approach to their food, which as a former chef I love. They source local produce from Staffordshire farmers and use renewable energy at every opportunity they can. Even their beer is sourced from local brewers in Burton on Trent!  It’s clear they take great pride in their environment, whilst taking care of their wedding parties. If you aren’t sold already then read on as to why I think it’s a special venue.

Why Coton House Farm, Whittington is an Outstanding Wedding Venue

The Location of Coton House Farm

Being born and bred in the West Midlands means I have visited the whole area for a wide variety of reasons, and Whittington in Staffordshire is one of my favourite parts of the country.

The little village of Whittington, situated near Lichfield, is where Coton House Farm wedding venue is located and it really is perfect.  It’s calm, very picturesque and also exactly what you would want and expect from a countryside venue. Quiet winding lanes, surrounded by the idyllic Staffordshire countryside, consisting of golden rapeseed fields (depending on the time of year) and beautiful woodlands, as well as tiny villages and country estates dotted around the rolling fields and rivers.

The area is steeped in history which would be a whole other blog in itself, but it’s this setting that provides the amazing backdrop for a dream countryside wedding.

Even if it is near where you live in the Midlands, Coton House Farm is one of those wedding venues that makes you feel like you have escaped into a different world, that is private, serene and the perfect location for your wedding day.

A Stunning Venue with Versatile Ceremony and Reception Spaces

Having shot here I can tell you that this venue offers an amazing experience. There are different locations throughout the farm that offers perfect spots for each section of your wedding.

You can get ready in The Stables, whether you are the wedding couple or the wedding party, it’s a great spot for me to take some candid shots of you before the ceremony too. Think of it as a beauty parlour and salon in one. It has barber-style chairs and cosy leather sofas to ensure you relax and get ready in style.

There are lots of options for the ceremony itself. You can have it indoors and outdoors, so the weather shouldn't have too much of an impact. The Oak Barn and historic Old Diary Barn are both fully licensed and have that luxurious yet rustic vibe. The Oak Barn can easily host up to 120 day guests and 220 evening guests and it's a flexible space, that suits any style of celebration.

If you have your heart set on something outdoors then the Pergola or Oak Terrace offers amazing settings for your perfect day. If you want a church wedding, the nearby church of St Giles is also just a short stroll away. You literally have all you need in one place.

I don’t say this lightly but one of the best things about Coton House Farm is that you can be as simple or as extra as you want your wedding to be. You can have a formal sit-down dinner in the Oak Barn, followed by partying the night away in the Pig Sty with street food pizzas! This place gives you all the options.

Coton House Farm Wedding Venue Prices

The venue has two package options, with add-ons. The Luxury Package and The Twilight Package. These packages range from £5000 upwards and literally cover all of your needs, taking your wedding planning off your hands and leaving you to enjoy the build-up.

There are also hotels located near the venue in Lichfield, and of course, the farm itself, so your accommodation needs are covered too.

My Experience as a Wedding Photographer at Coton House Farm Venue

Wedding photography is the way we share the memories of your wedding day visually and capture the essence for you to relive again and again. I can honestly say this venue is a dream to work at. The beautifully restored barns and wide-open fields provide so many incredible backdrops, and as a photographer, that’s exactly what I look for. We were lucky enough to be there when the fields were full and that enabled me to take some great photos with Liz & Dan with a really special backdrop.

The natural light here just floods in wherever it can and the rustic but classy feel to the place just enhances the overall experience and of course those all-important wedding images.

Being familiar with Coton House Farm wedding venue definitely gives me an advantage when it comes to knowing the best angles and anticipating key moments. I know where the best places are and the times to capture the light perfectly for those stunning golden hour shots.

Whether it’s the intimate atmosphere inside the barns, or the vast fields, knowing where to be and when helps me get those shots that really tell the story of your day.

What’s even better is that I’ll be returning here in 2025 for another wedding, which only deepens my connection to the venue. When you have firsthand knowledge of the location, the layout, the lighting and the flow of the day, there will be less focus on the rigid logistics and more on capturing your wedding. Those real, emotional moments that may have been missed otherwise.

Planning Your Wedding at Coton House Farm: Photography Tips

If you are wondering if it really is the venue for you, then check out these photos I took at Liz & Dan's wedding day there. You’ll see that the wedding venue really added to the visuals.

It’s not just about enjoying and loving the best day of your life there, although that's the most important thing of course, but it’s also about capturing the day, so you can relive it again and again. Those dream shots to put on your Instagram, show to friends that couldn’t be there or just for you to relive with a huge smile on your face. It’s also those candid, unscripted shots, the rye smile or the tear shed by your father.

The mix of countryside, small village charm and wide-open farm fields make for some stunning shots, but there are a few tips I’ve picked up that will help you get the most out of your wedding photography here.

1. Timing is Everything: Golden Hour is Your Best Friend

I am a huge fan of those golden light photos and if you are too then I would highly recommend planning some shots for the ‘golden hour’ (the hour before sunset). This time at the farm is really special and just adds to the romantic vibe of the day.

The venue's location set in the gorgeous countryside, means uninterrupted views which are perfect for capturing this and having those amazing pictures. They also have a twilight wedding package, which is perfect for this time of day.

2. Collaboration is Key: Work with the Venue’s Wedding Coordinator

One thing I loved about shooting here was how easy it was to work with the venue’s wedding coordinators. The team guides every couple through the entire process, making sure the day flows smoothly and taking away any potential stress, so you can relax and fully enjoy your wedding.

They know all the best spots and will help with any requests to make areas photo-ready, if needed. Whether it’s the Oak Terrace, the Pergola, or the Old Dairy Barn, having the coordinator on board means you can move seamlessly between spaces without missing out on key shots.

3. Personalise Your Shot List: Capture What Matters Most

Every couple’s wedding is unique, so your shot list should be too. I always recommend chatting with me about the moments that are most important to you. For Liz and Dan, we made sure to capture not just the traditional moments – like the cutting of the cake and the first dance – but also more personal touches, like candid moments with their family during the reception, and intimate portraits in the Stable Courtyard. Think about what memories you want to look back on, and don’t be afraid to get specific, I love my couples to get exactly what they want from their photos.

In terms of must-have shots at Coton House Farm, here are a few that worked especially well for Liz and Dan:

  • Getting ready shots in The Stables, made for relaxed anticipation for the day, well…maybe a few last-minute nerves.

  • The Oak Barn during the ceremony, with its beautiful rustic beams and magical feel.

  • Outdoor shots in the fields, with the sunlight rippling through the clouds.

  • Reception moments in the Stable Courtyard, where the relaxed atmosphere really set the scene for some great candid photos and capturing those dance moves.

Whether you’re going for a relaxed, countryside vibe or something a little more luxurious, Coton House Farm offers a variety of exceptional backdrops. With a bit of planning and collaboration, we can ensure your wedding photos will capture the true feel of your day.
